The Emmanuel Community is an association of the faithful of all states of life. It takes its name from the Gospel of St Matthew:
‘Look! The virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they will call Emmanuel, a name which means “God-is-with-us”.’ (Mt 1:23)
Emmanuel is seen as ‘God is with us’ in daily life. It is to recognize Jesus as the centre of our lives in order to be ‘in the world without being of the world.’
The members of Emmanuel seek holiness in their ordinary lives. For some this is in family and professional life. For others it is in consecrated celibacy. For others still, it is a life dedicated to apostolic works.
The profound gift of the Community derives from Eucharistic Adoration of God, Emmanuel, who is truly present among us. From this Adoration comes compassion for all men who are starving, physically and spiritually. And from this compassion also is born the thirst to evangelise the whole world, especially those people who are the most poor.
The abandonment to the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, the intercession of Our Lady the Mother of God, the Sacraments of the liturgy, are the foundations of the life and missionary dynamism of the Community in the life of the Church.
The first canonical recognition of the Emmanuel Community by the Holy See was in 1992. In 2009, the Community was established as an International Public Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right.
