Biography by dates

  • 15 August 1914: Birth in Paris, on the Feast of the Assumption.
  • 1933: When he was 19 he became aware of his pride, and experienced a radical conversion and became an adorer of God. He was driven by the desire to make Him known to other people, especially to the poor and to young drug addicts. He then decided, as an unmarried person in the world, to devote his life to Adoration and evangelisation. He worked in the world of fine arts and cinema.
    Up to the age of 58, Pierre Goursat lived the ordinary life of a lay Christian in the world – and yet, however…

  • 1971: Pierre Goursat bought a barge on the Seine in which he planned to welcome young men in difficulty.
  • 1972: In February Pierre Goursat received an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and abandoned himself totally to the Spirit. He was 58 years old. Young people gathered around him and several prayer groups started in Paris.  These groups were the origin of the Emmanuel Community.
  • 1972 – 1985: In spite of his poor health, Pierre Goursat agreed to lead the Emmanuel Community. He shared his spiritual and human experience and his love for the Church. In his room he received bishops, members of the Community and young people in difficulty, paying each person the same attention. He listened and gave advice in a humorous and profound way.  He drew his strength and inspiration from long hours of nightly prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
  • 1985: When he was 71 and suffering from heart problems, he gave up leadership of the Community and dedicated his life to prayer.
  • 25th March 1991: He died quietly on the day of the Annunciation at the age of 77 years.
  • 7th January 2010: opening of the cause for canonisation of the Servant of God, Pierre Goursat
