In the footsteps of Pierre Goursat. Pierre Goursat (1914-1991) was the founder of the Emmanuel Community. Throughout his life he worked for Christian renewal using culture and formation. The archdiocese of Paris has asked for the opening of his process of beatification. Pierre Goursat studied at the Louvre School in Paris, was long-time director of the French board of catholic film censors, a founder of several publishing houses for cultural and scientific works, and an associate of Cardinal Suhard (Archbishop of Paris from 1940-1949).
Pierre Goursat worked for more than 40 years for the renewal of Christian life in society, through the human and spiritual education of generations of young people. The Pierre Goursat University Institute wants to follow in the footsteps of the many intuitions and initiatives undertaken by Pierre Goursat
Why ? The Pierre Goursat University Institute was founded to promote a Christian vision of the human person through training, teaching and research. In this perspective the Pierre Goursat Univeristy Institute places itself in the service of men and women today through a variety of educative works, and in university fields such as philosophy and theology, exegesis and pastoral studies, ethics and science.
For whom ? Internationally, the Pierre Goursat University Institute promotes the integral development of the human person in all fields, with a particular attention to young people. It wishes to add to he debate on faith and reason and contribute to building a ‘civilization of love’ for the good of the whole of humanity.
How ?
The Pierre Goursat University Institute makes use of the particular skills and experience of the Emmanuel Community in the integral development of the human person. Engaging culture today with a view to a profound transformation of society, the Pierre Goursat University Institute wishes to share this educational and university heritage, in order to place ‘the joy of truth’ at the very heart of the challenges of contemporary life.
The Emmanuel Community The Emmanuel Community is present in more than 60 countries. It has 8000 members, including 200 priests, over one hundred seminarians and 200 consecrated celibates (men and women). All of its members are committed to serving the Church. Most of its members are laypeople who express their Christian conditions through professional, social and civic commitments, each one in the society and culture to which he or she belongs. It is from the dynamism of its members’ lives that the Emmanuel Community has developed a particular attention to education and development and also a university level competency across many fields. In 1992 the Holy See officially recognised the Emmanuel Community, for the whole of the Catholic Church, confirming the community in its mission to work for the renewal of Christian and human values on all cultures and societies (see decree of recognition of the Emmanuel Community, Vatican City, December 8th 1992).
It is in a spirit of faithfulness to this call that the Pierre Goursat University Institute was established.
