Helping at a Summer Session

Since they began in 1975, the Sessions organised each summer by the Emmanuel Community operate essentially thanks to the help of volunteers.

At each Session between 300 and 600 people look after such services as cooking, accommodation, cleaning, putting up notices, the first-aid post, the bar, and the reception desk. They ensure that their Session runs smoothly for all those taking part (of whom there were 23,000 in 2013).

In order to support this organisation, each person attending a Session is asked to devote one or two half-days to the service of their choice.

The talks, workshops, times of sharing, Adoration, Masses and evening programmes are all opportunities to encounter God … so also is helping with a service!

Eric’s testimony:

«During the programme on the last evening, someone recalled the three points if you want to follow Christ which Pope Francis gave to the young people gathered in Rio: prayer, the sacraments and serving others. It gave me pleasure to hear these words since that is exactly what I experienced throughout this Session. In fact, I was responsible for the team in the kitchen, which meant that I spent most of my days among the ovens and pots and pans. But I was never upset that I was spending this Forum somewhat separated from it (all the same, I was able to take part in the Morning Praise and the programmes in the evening). On the contrary, I felt great joy, and the strength to perform this service as well as I could. What touched me was the faithfulness of some of the young people at the Forum who came every day to help me in the kitchen, and also the good humoured atmosphere which reigned. I conclude by sincerely thanking God for the trust He places us when He calls us to serve our brothers and sisters!»
